Mat & Kat's big bike trip

Day 97 Istanbul

📅 Wednesday 15 July 2026 📍 Türkiye
Istanbul
This morning we all did a tour of the Topkapı Palace, where the Ottoman sultans lived, which included a 6th century Christian church, the oldest any of us has ever been in. The palace is beautiful, designed like a series of small pavilions surrounded by gardens, instead of one grand palace in the European style. The religious artefacts building included such relics as Moses' staff, John the Baptist's arm and Mohammed's beard hair and cardigan. It was quite exhausting so we had pick-me-up Turkish coffee and baklava (Kat had lemonade) afterwards, then Kat and Mat went for a gözleme lunch (like a filled crepe). In the evening we experienced the most packed tram ride ever to see the very impressive Roman Walls of Constantine, which still exist all around the old part of the city.
