Mat & Kat's big bike trip
Day 78 Mesolongi
Today is our 27th wedding anniversary 🥳 and we're celebrating tonight with a meal in Mesolonghi.
Our wedding day feels like it happened yesterday, and also like it was a lifetime ago, which is probably the truest thing you can say about 27 years. Thank you to everyone who was there to celebrate with us! We had a giant chocolate cake, a bouncy castle, and an unexpected visit from the fire brigade after the disco's dry ice machine got a little out of hand.
Like the terrain on this trip, our marriage has had its ups and downs. We've both been changing as we've got older, and sometimes that's felt like distance. But this journey has reminded us that change doesn't have to mean growing apart, it can mean growing alongside each other if you put the work in. The last few months have given us something rare: almost 24 hours a day together, just the two of us, with enough time and space to talk through the things that have been on our minds, and to agree where we want to be: together.
The most important thing this bike ride has given us is a reminder of what an amazing team we make. Not because we were meant to be together, but because we've been together long enough to anticipate each other's needs and meet them. Mat searches for somewhere to stay, Kat books it, Mat navigates. We decide what we want for dinner; Kat shops; Mat cooks. One of us figures out how to cross a body of water; the other checks the options; we buy the tickets together.
We complete each other, not by fate, but by choice, every day.
In the evening we went to a restaurant to celebrate and had a wonderful meal of zucchini balls, peppers stuffed with spicy feta, aubergine and cheese roast for Kat, slow-cooked lamb and chips for Mat then melon to finish. Mat got to try out a wooden bicycle which was incredibly heavy and uncomfortable - but looked cool!
