Mat & Kat's big bike trip
Day 30 Padua
Today we're heading to Padua on the train, which feels like a real treat. The train is super busy, there's barely room for us let alone our bikes. We're travelling through rolling green countryside full of grape vines, grateful for a rest day. There are two UNESCO World Heritage sites here, hoping we can get to visit both by the end of the day.
Our original plan for this part of Northern Italy was to go across the seaward side of the Venice lagoon, island hopping across the whole thing. Because that's what the official EuroVelo 8 website shows the route as doing. But it turns out that it's not possible because there are two islands right at the mouth of the lagoon that aren't connected by a ferry route! Glad we discovered this before we started, rather than when we got there.
We visited the San Giovanni baptistry which contains amazing world heritage frescoes and the botanic gardens, another world heritage site and the oldest academic gardens in the world. They have some extremely old trees and an amazing historical collection of plants. Padua is beautiful and wonderful to wander around, so glad to have had a sunny afternoon here.
