Kat & Mat's big bike trip
Day 66 Laç
It was quiet in Shkodër on the way out, and had a real SE Asia vibe - no road markings, lots of mopeds, people cooking on wood fires, loads of rubbish everywhere. Drivers are very calm, especially once we got out into the countryside. Passed two horse and carts. It's pretty: fields full of crops, mountains in the distance, small towns of people hanging out and everyone is smiling. We really like it here.
Stopped for a rest in Barballush, it's so peaceful here. Old men weaving about the road on bicycles, a tractor pulling a trailer with two women standing in the back, heading for church, waving at us.
A ten year old kid on a moped pulled up next to us, pointed at Mat's pink hair, put his thumbs up and said "Yesss! Yesss!" Then rode off.
Along the road we met a lovely Dutch cycling couple in their 60s who were going the other direction. They'd come from Istanbul and we're heading back home. We swapped notes and took a photo together.
All morning we rode along tiny rural roads, everyone smiling and waving and saying hello as we passed them. Komoot took us down smaller and smaller roads, then onto gravel tracks. At one point the road was almost completely blocked by a big pile of gravel, but we scooted round it.
Once we rejoined the main road at Balldren we saw a shady bar and stopped for a much-needed cold drink and a rest.
People do not drive yellow cars around here.
We're staying in a nice hotel in the middle of a big farm tonight. It's quite fancy and we left our evening wear at home. They have a flock of chickens, another of turkeys, and few cute puppies that love to gnaw on our shoes.
