Mat & Kat's big bike trip

Day 3 Vinarós

📅 Sunday 12 April 2026 🚴 65 km 📍 Spain
Vinarós
Woke up to a flat tyre on Kat's back wheel, maybe a thorn or something tiny punctured it yesterday. Her tyres are getting a bit old, so we'll replace them tomorrow in Vinaròs. Luckily we always have two spare inner tubes. The morning's ride was beautiful, the orange groves gave way to almonds and olives, and then to a wetland nature reserve full of birds. Kat has some kind of problem with her back wheel, it's causing a bumpy ride, so we'll definitely change her tyres later. The route took us on a lovely 15km ride through the Sierra de Irta, a natural park along the coast. There were a few drops of rain, and the sea was rough, but it was very pretty. There's a climb up switch backs to a tower just before leaving the park which got us using ALL the gears, our first proper hill training. As rode the last five km to Peñíscola the rain got a lot heavier, and we hid out in a restaurant for pizza and hot chocolate, waiting for it to end. It didn't really stop, but it did get a bit lighter, so we hopped back on the bikes for a wet, not very fun 15km to Vinaròs, our destination for the day. We're staying in a huge apartment that has gas heaters and a lovely warm shower. We hung up all our clothes to dry and settled down with a cup of tea to celebrate being 65km closer to Istanbul. Yay!
