Kat & Mat's big bike trip

Day 9 La Jonquera

📅 Saturday 18 April 2026 🚴 62 km 📍 Spain
La Jonquera
Mat: What a glorious day! 66km of beautiful rolling landscapes, with the snowy peaks of the Pyrenees in the background. The first surprise of the day was a deer dashing out into the road in front of me, way too close for me to brake or do anything apart from imagine a horrible accident. Luckily it crossed my path and disappeared into a field next to the road. It was an easy 40km to Figueres, birthplace and resting place of Salvador Dalí. After lunch in a shady square, we toured the museum which is also his tomb, he's buried in the crypt at the bottom. It's a stunning museum full of so many of his works, well worth a trip if you're anywhere nearby. I'm so glad we got to visit, as our original plan had us coming here on Monday when it's closed. Inspired by art, we hopped back on the bikes for the 20km ride to La Jonquera, right on the border with France. On the way we passed surprise number two: a sex worker by the side of the road, 10km from the nearest town. She was at serious risk of sunburn on a day like this. Arrived into La Jonquera about 15:30 and checked into our room. Like most border towns I've been to, it's very strange. A weird mix of supermarkets, bars, sex toy shops and casinos. Looking forward to exploring it later!
Love, Kat & Mat x
