Kat & Mat's big bike trip

Day 79 Patras

📅 Saturday 27 June 2026 🚴 43 km 📍 Greece
Patras
We started on a quiet road with just a few trucks that took us alongside the main highway. We saw and heard an eagle. It was quite pretty with a few smallish hills. As we were congratulating ourselves on an easy ride, we rounded the final hill crest at the entrance to the Gulf of Corinth and got hit by an incredibly strong headwind. We battled down the hill and then along to the ferry port at Antirrio, the wind making it very hard work all the way. The ferry was free for bicycles and people! There's an impressive bridge (cyclists not allowed for windy reasons) but it's cheaper for cars and lorries to take the ferry so our crossing was full. There's a little fort and lighthouse on one side of the channel and another little fort on the other side. After being blown about, we docked at Rio then rode a very windy, dusty 5km to our apartment. Overall it was a short day and we arrived in time to have lunch. The host had left homegrown lemons, tomatoes, plums, cucumber and watermelon as well as water and eggs in the fridge.
